Play a key role in the on-going development and application of projects helping to design and implement AI compliance frameworks for accountable, ethical and responsible use of AI.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out research focused on the legal context of the development and application of artificial intelligence for policing and security.
  • Support legal, ethical, and data protection related processes related to activities in CENTRIC.
  • Engage with national and international partners on the application of the EU AI Act, GDPR, and other relevant legislation.
  • Leads small research or consultancy projects including setting the objectives of the project, leading the team, and managing the work of junior or temporary staff.
  • Develops research objectives and proposals for own and collaborative research.
  • Makes recommendations to the manager or project leader on e.g. development needs of the team, research design, and the need for further research based on research outcomes.
  • Writes literature reviews to establish the latest research in the field.
  • Collects data using a range of suitable techniques.
  • Analyses primary and secondary data gathered through a variety of methods.
  • Publishes project reports, research papers, and journal articles and present research outcomes to conferences / seminars.
  • Continually update knowledge and understanding in the field or specialism.
  • Provides training and development as necessary to temporary or junior staff working on research projects.
  • Writes or inputs to project bids with colleagues including writing the detailed methods and
    techniques and rationale etc.
  • Liaises with clients where unrealistic / changing expectations on deadlines or funding, involving manager as necessary to resolve.
  • Researches and identifies options for future projects or consultancy and generates some funding through research/KT/consultancy.
  • Identifies possible partners or clients for consultancy and other sources of income through networking, assessing journals/publications to consider future research direction.
  • May be involved in teaching appropriate courses and supporting research students.

Skillset

  • Honours degree in law or equivalent professional qualification or experience in a relevant discipline.
  • Doctorate in a relevant discipline or working towards, or equivalent research experience.
  • Membership of professional body.
  • Developing expertise in law, particularly in the area of AI.
  • Substantial experience in law, ethics and data protection in relation to technology.
  • Experience of conceptualising and running interviews, workshops, focus groups or similar.
  • Substantial experience in legal, ethical, and data protection within research or policing /security environment
  • Experience of attracting or supporting external funding.
  • Experience of managing small project teams and resources.
  • Has a developing academic profile in specialist area.
  • Good planning and organisational skills and the ability to manage conflicting demands and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively, both on projects and as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively manage relations with a variety of stakeholders both internal and external to the University.
  • Ability to concisely present findings orally and in writing.
  • Ability to undertake and document all key stages in research to ensure high quality analysis.
  • Ability to undertake a range of research support tasks, including literature reviews, preparation of presentations, contribution to report writing, and contribution to funding bids.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal requirements to both operational and research environments.
  • Ability to adapt legal knowledge and expertise to new areas / sectors / domains.
