Dr. Bilal Mateen is Chief AI Officer at PATH—the organization’s inaugural chief AI officer—where he leads PATH’s artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and oversees programs developing AI-based solutions to advance global health. In February 2026, he was appointed to the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence, a 40-person panel assessing the real-world impacts of AI. A physician by training, Bilal has an academic interest in health-related applications of data science and machine learning, and holds an honorary professorial appointment at the University of Birmingham and a clinical data science fellowship at the Alan Turing Institute. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Digital Square at PATH and as clinical technology lead and senior manager for digital technology at the Wellcome Trust, where his team worked on digital public goods and software infrastructure addressing mental health, the impacts of climate change on human health, and emerging infectious diseases.
