Chris Hartgerink

Senior Software Engineer

data.org

Chris Hartgerink (they/them; @chartgerink) is the Software Engineer for data.org. They are a generalist: part researcher, part statistician, part software programmer, part businessperson.

Starting in social psychology under who later became known as the biggest known psychology fraud, they subsequently focused on meta-research and ways to improve the sustainability of research. They were a Mozilla Open Science Fellow and a Shuttleworth Fellow.

After leaving academia in 2019, they founded Liberate Science GmbH. A mentor calls them a “voice of reason” while also being a “system challenger.” Their philosophy of openness is one of equity and power distribution, instead of accumulation. To do this, we need to (out)grow systems, not burn systems down – a philosophy captured by the Liberate Science Manifesto.

They now work at data.org as a Senior Software Engineer, helping create digital public goods that leverage data for a better world.
