Introduction to Infectious Disease Modelling for Public Health

This course is Part 1 of a 5-part course series designed for public health professionals, data scientists, epidemiologists, healthcare workers, policy makers, and anyone interested in infectious disease modelling, outbreak response, and gender-responsive data analysis.

Course on infectious disease modelling using R, tailored to Africa, with hands-on practice & gender lens.

Participants will take on the role of community health detectives, engaging in a learning experience where datasets, patterns, and analytical tasks become key tools for understanding and addressing public health challenges.

The course is part of the Epi Training Kit, an open-access e-learning strategy for infectious disease modelling and public health data science, developed by Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and powered by data.org for the African region. This learning strategy aims to strengthen local capacities for outbreak response and foster knowledge exchange across regions facing similar epidemiological challenges.

Learning Outcomes

  • Become familiar with concepts of epidemic theory (basic SIR and SEIR models).
  • Understand the differences between incidence and prevalence.
  • Understand the concept of basic parameters in epidemic theory.
  • Reflect on the applications of epidemic theory to address public health problems caused by infectious diseases
