How to Use this Playbook

While there are many ways the playbook may benefit your organization, a few include:

  • Using different components (workshops, coaching, and peer learning) of the cohort, to determine what might best fit your needs
  • Adapting the templates, slide decks, and other materials for customized use
  • Developing your own data maturity program based on organizational assessments outlined in Chapter 2

These are just a few of the many ways you may use the playbook and its resources to develop a program, session, or resource(s) that meet your needs. The idea of building data maturity in an organization is often daunting, but the cohort program showed that it can be done. This playbook breaks down the process into manageable steps for you to embark on your own data maturity journey.

Background Information

This playbook will use learnings from the Data Maturity Cohort program, which ran from June 2023 to April 2024. The DMC provided extensive support and valuable resources to eight participating social impact organizations (SIOs) in building their data maturity. Through a combination of workshops, coaching sessions, and peer learning opportunities, participants gained practical tools and knowledge to enhance their organization’s data maturities. Part of the program’s success was predicated on providing the stated support through an approach that allowed participants to pick and choose what resources they utilized to best assist them and their organizations. The program’s emphasis on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility was integral to ensure that all voices were heard and considered, and we encourage you to do the same in your efforts. Participants reported notable improvements in their data practices, including the development of data asset trackers, implementation of data security policies, and the creation of dashboards for data quality visualization.
