Climate Data to Policy Action: Closing the Gaps

February 6, 2024 10am ET

Climate data—particularly where it intersects with health and socioeconomic datasets—holds the power to unlock critical insights, provide early warning systems, and drive policymaking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and last-mile communities. Exiting the globe’s hottest year on record, with more than four in ten people living in areas that are highly vulnerable to climate change and a projected 21 million additional deaths by 2050 due to a warmer climate, we have no time to wait in putting climate data and its enabling infrastructure, capacity, and tools to work.

data.org will bring together in conversation purpose-driven data experts working at the intersection of climate and public health to identify the tools and information currently available and pinpoint gaps – especially in LMIC contexts. Further, this panel will explore the parallels between the established health sector frameworks and the burgeoning climate data ecosystem needs, asking:  What lessons can we take from public health data infrastructure, governance, and decision-making and apply to climate data? What roles currently exist that can be upskilled to understand and act on climate data? What new interdisciplinary roles, structures, and approaches need to be created for effective data-driven decision-making?
